New Start Clinic helps
recovering addicts get a ‘new start’

BREWSTER – The New Start Clinic, a treatment facility that is the first of its kind in this area, opened for business in the Brewster Medical Center building at 520 W. Indian Avenue, last October. New Start “is a medically supervised outpatient addiction recovery program that is committed to helping people fight opiate addiction with little or no withdrawl symptoms,” said its Chief of Operations, Nicole Smith said.

Brewster initiates customer
income survey for water project

BREWSTER – The City of Brewster is looking for funding and grants to help finance the upgrade and improvements to the city’s potable water and wastewater systems. As part of that effort the city is reaching out to its customers with a household income survey to help determine the average income level of residents. That information could help with the application process where such qualifications as low income play a role in determining funding eligibility.
With funding assistance from the Department of Health, the city has contracted with the Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC) a non-profit, impartial third party to conduct the survey. RCAC will mail an income survey letter and form with return postage-paid envelope to every Brewster household. Residents are urged to provide the requested information and return to RCAC.

Pateros City Council selects
Mike Harding to fill vacancy

PATEROS – City council members interviewed prospective candidates to fill the council seat vacated by Ryan Greene at its regular meeting last Tuesday, Jan. 10.
“We had three very qualified candidates who applied for the position,” said mayor Carlene Anders.
The candidates included Dena McDaniel, Kayla Johansen, and Mike Harding. Following interviews of each, council selected Harding to fill the vacancy. He will be officially sworn in at next month’s meeting on Feb. 21.

Citizens urged to run water
taps to prevent freeze-ups

BREWSTER – Business and residential water users in the Pateros-Brewster-Bridgeport-Mansfield areas are once again urged to allow water taps to run a small amount of water during the cold months to reduce the incidence of freezing pipes.
Brewster Public Works Director, Lee Webster said his crews have responded to dozens of calls to thaw or repair frozen water lines this season.

Bridgeport residents among nine
arrested in investigation

BRIDGEPORT – Four current and two former Bridgeport residents were among nine suspects arrested, Feb. 24, by members of the North Central Washington Narcotics Task Force (NCWNTF) in a multi-jurisdictional raid that seized narcotics, cash, weapons and vehicles in Douglas and Okanogan counties and on the Colville Reservation.

foundation board to reconvene


BREWSTER – The Board of Commissioners of Three Rivers Hospital got the good news from CEO Scott Graham at its February meeting that the non-profit Three Rivers Hospital Foundation should soon be operational once again as an organization to promote and support the medical facility.

BRIDGEPORT – The Brewster Lady Bears rallied to erase a third-quarter, six-point deficit, catch a tough Tonasket Tigers team, force the Central Washington 2B League Championship game into a 49-49 overtime, and win the title, 56-52, in Bridgeport last Saturday, Feb. 11.

Bears blow by Oroville, 73-41, to win CWB League championship
BREWSTER – Playing one of their best games of the season, the Brewster Bears combined an effective man-to-man defense with accurate shooting to easily defeat the Oroville Hornets, 73-41 for the Central Washington 2B League Championship at Brewster last Monday, Feb. 13.

Dogs have their day, their say, their way at Brewster Council
BREWSTER – Pit bull dogs will no longer be banned from the City of Brewster after a majority city council members voted to once again allow pit bulls, or mixes thereof, within city limits – with restrictions and conditions.
Bridgeport resident, Eduardo Orozco, raised the issue of the pit bull ban as he addressed council members concerning Luna, the female mixed pit bull he owns. Orozco told council he was not aware of the ban and asked member to reconsider the ordinance banning them.

High school hosts multi-agency training exercise
BREWSTER – Law enforcement, EMS, and emergency response teams conducted a Multi-Agency Training Exercise (MATE) at Brewster High School early Monday morning, March 27.
The monitored exercise was designed to assess the readiness and reactions of first-responders. Street accesses to BHS were blocked, checkpoints established, and a lockdown imposed on all unauthorized personnel. Those restrictions extended to a member of the news media - requested to participate in the same manner a real-life incident would predict – to test interactions with  news representatives and access to designated sources.

Bridgeport ‘plugs-in’ with new vehicle charging station
BRIDGEPORT – Electric cars will soon be a more frequent sight in Bridgeport thanks to a new car charging station that is nearing completion in Bouska Square in the city’s downtown core.
The new station is a cooperative effort between the City of Bridgeport, the North Central Washington Economic Development District (NCWEDD) and its affiliate, Plug-in North Central Washington. Completion of the station will add Bridgeport to a network of outlets that will allow drivers access to power along State Route 17 and SR 174. Other stations are located in Pateros, Grand Coulee, Wilbur and Davenport.

Heavy rain on saturated soil triggers slides, washouts, closures
PATEROS – Heavy rainfall in the early morning hours of Friday, April 8, -  too much for already saturated soil - caused debris slides, washouts and lesser water problems in several parts of Okanogan County late last week.  Drivers from the Pateros-Brewster-Bridgeport areas found road closures or delays on both State Route 153 north of Pateros and State Route 20 west of Okanogan following the Friday morning downpour.

Candidate filing period open May15-19
WATERVILLE-OKANOGAN – Candidates wishing to file for elective office for one of the many positions open this year in Douglas or Okanogan counties have from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, May 15 through Friday, May 19 to submit online candidacy declarations.

Bears land six on CWB All-League teams
BREWSTER – Brewster sophomore, Joe Taylor, voted Most Valuable Player, leads this year’s nominees on the 2017 Central Washington B All-League baseball teams. Joining Taylor from Brewster are freshman Corey Jarrell on the All-League First Team, sophomores Isaac Baker and Jeff Sonneman and freshman Kade Kelpman on the Second Team, and freshman Jorge Ramirez as Honorable Mention.

Hospital, school district, council positions seek candidates
Okanogan - Okanogan County Auditor announced a special three-day filing period after several elective positions in Okanogan County failed to attract any candidates for the Nov. 1, 2017 General Election, primary election. The special extension began Tuesday, May 23.

Boys and Girls Club holds back-to-back fund-raisers
BREWSTER – The Brewster Boys and Girls Club (BBGC) held back-to-back fund raisers at venues in Chelan and Brewster last Sunday and Monday, May 21-22.

Bridgeport Daze draws parade entries, vendors, spectators
BRIDGEPORT – Unlike the 2016 last-minute scramble to resuscitate and put on an earlier-cancelled Bridgeport Daze, this year’s event was pre-planned and good-to-go as parade entries, vendors, participants and spectators converged in Bridgeport, last Saturday morning, June 3.
Parade participants were already lining up at 9 a.m. for the 11 a.m. parade start and as the minutes ticked by, more gathered at the old track field east of town for the march down Columbia Avenue.

Naturalization ceremony welcomes 35 new U.S. citizens
BREWSTER – A group of 35 new United States citizens were invited to join history’s greatest experiment in human democracy at a naturalization ceremony held in the Brewster High School gym last Tuesday, June 6. In May of last year, BHS hosted a similar celebration for 43 new U.S. citizens.

Council takes outdoor volleyball court under advisement
BREWSTER – A standing-room-only crowd filled the meeting room last Wednesday, June 14, as the city council listened to a proposal for a new volleyball court, swore in a new police officer, heard a recycling update and discussed the upcoming Fourth of July parade among other agenda items.
