Burt Edward Workman

Burt Edward Workman was born May 13, 1926 in Richwood, West Virginia, Greenbrier County.  Burt passed away January 21, 2018 in his home at Bridgeport, Washington, Douglas County.  

Burt was raised by his grandparents James E. Workman and Sarah A. Workman.  At the age of 3 years or so, his grandparents moved west to Green Mountain, Woodland, Washington, and then to Port Orchard, Washington to attend a single room schoolhouse on Glenwood Road.  Years later he attended South Kitsap High School, where Burt played football and track.  Burt was offered a scholarship to the University of Washington to play football, but instead on June 5, 1942 chose to take a training job as Mechanical Learner at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.  On December 7, 1942 his position changed to Apprenticeship.  Burt left the shipyard on April 10, 1944 to join the Marines (USMC).  Burt did his basic training at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base and while there was selected to represent the Marines in a service boxing match.  Burt made it to the championship round and came in 2nd for his weight class.  Burt was honorably discharged from the Marines on May 20, 1946 and then re-entered the shipyard to complete his apprenticeship.  Burt was eventually sent to the Subic Bay repair facility in the Philippines.  There he worked as a Shop 56/99 Pipe Fitter General Foreman and was promoted to Shop 06 Tool and Die Makers Superintendent from 1967-1969.  Burt returned home with his family and retired as a Shop 56 General foreman on December 3, 1979 with 34 years of service.

Burt was married to Lois May Calkins on March 22, 1949 at Clark County, Washington.  

Burt and Lois had two children, Cheryl Ann Kelly (Workman) and Gerald Burton Workman.  Burt has 9 grandchildren; Steve Elliot, Chad Welfl, Travis Workman, Scott Kelly, Rachael Crooks, Chris Kelly, Josh Allen, Heather Carrington, and Megan Workman.  Burt has 15 great grandchildren; Dalton Brillhart, Jordan Brooks, Tyler Kelly, Taylor Kelly, Jasper Kelly, Amelia Crooks, Lachlin Crooks, Kaydence Carrington, Rilynn Carrington, Koye Carrington, Reinstin Carrington, Saymara (Workman) Carrillo, Liliana (Workman) Carrillo, Gabriella (Workman) Carrillo, and Sawyer (Ericson) Allen.

Burt belonged to the following organizations; the American Legion 1947-2018, member of the Vaqueros Horse Club Woodland, Wash., Kitsap Saddle Club 1953-unknown, Boy Scouts of America Troop Leader in the Philippines 1967-1969, and the Assembly of God Church Deacon.  Burt’s hobbies consisted of working on old cars, restoring old saddles and spurs, camping, fishing, and hunting.

Burt was preceded in death by his grandparents, his mother Onieta Steph, half-brothers Roy and Bill Cheplak, and daughter Cheryl Ann Kelly.  Burt loved life, but foremost his family, his friends, his Country, the United States Marine Corps, and his God.  Burt’s favorite quote was (God is Real). Burt/Dad/Grandpa/Great Grandpa will always be remembered for his story telling, writings, and his books.  He will be greatly missed by everyone.  

Services will be held at Barnes Chapel, Brewster, Wash., Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 11 a.m.  followed  by a dinner/potluck at the Bethel Assembly in Bridgeport, Wash.
