PATEROS - The Billygoats and Nannies varsity basketball teams lost to Entiat but defeated Cascade Christian Academy (CCA) and Moses Lake Christian Academy (MLCA) in three games played over four days last week.

MLCA brought its A-game and a couple of big inside men, senior, Ben Caballero and junior, Walter Meise to give the Billygoats a close 40-36 scare last Friday, Jan. 13.

The Lions used their big men to keep Pateros out of the offensive key and hit some early buckets to give MLCA a five-point, first quarter lead. The Lions' defense held Pateros to just four points in the second quarter to lead 20-11 at halftime.

"They were able to play solid defense and we weren't able to get any shots to fall in the first half," said coach Mark Stennes.

The Billygoats came out in the second half and forced some turnovers that were converted into points to get Pateros back into the game. At the end of the third quarter the teams were knotted 26-all.

"Sam Larsen lead us in all categories and hit some big shots to get us back in the lead," Stennes said. "Logan Robinson and Armando Rojas did a great job of getting rebounds against a good rebounding MLCA team."

The Billygoats were scheduled to play third-ranked Yakima Tribal on Tuesday, Jan. 17

"This is going to be our toughest matchup of the year but we are excited for the challenge," Stennes said.

Nannies roll

Led by the 19 points of Anna Schluneger and 12 apiece from Bobbi Hall and Aubrey Miller, the Pateros Nannies nearly held MLCA to single digits as they bowled over the Lady Lions 52-12.

It was a "solid effort from the girls," coach John Ellis said. "They did a good job of taking care of the ball and reducing our turnovers."

Cascade Christian

The Pateros teams picked up a league win against CCA on Thursday, Jan. 12.

The Billygoats allowed CCA only six points in the first half and "continued to build a lead from there," Stennes said. "Larsen and Robinson did a good job of creating and knocking down open shots to lead us offensively."

Playing what he called a "solid defensive effort," coach Ellis said the Nannies held the Lady Wolverines to singles digits in each quarter on the way to a 34-point win.

"Bobbi Hall played well after returning from a two-game absence due to an ankle injury," Ellis said. "Samantha (White) had a career high 10 rebounds."

Entiat edges

The Billygoats lost a close league contest at Entiat, 45-43, after letting the Tigers pounce on a 10-point first-quarter lead on Tuesday, Jan. 10.

"We were able to chip away at the lead the rest of the game," Stennes said. "We struggled with their press defense giving up 22 turnovers.

Pateros closed within three a halftime but still trailed by four points at the end of the third. "Andrew Gonzalez gave us a spark off the bench hitting some shots to get us back into it but it wasn't enough," Stennes said.

The Nannies couldn't break out of single digits in any of their first three quarters as the Lady Tigers built a 29-8 halftime lead and rode it to a 27-point win.
