After a 13-year run

Yancey’s Pateros Hardware will close March 30

PATEROS – Sport fishermen who want the latest local updates on what’s biting and where hereabouts are going to have to find another go-to resource when Yancey Pateros Hardware closes its doors on March 30. Following 13 years of doing business at 164 Pateros Mall the outlet stocked everything from automotive and hardware to sporting goods to liquor and seemed to operate on the principle that “if we don’t have it, you probably don’t need it.”

Yancey’s began a merchandise liquidation on March 1 with discount levels that will increase weekly on much of its inventory through the end of the month.

“My wife and I are both 72,” said owner Jim Yancey earlier this week, “so it’s time to move on to other things.”

While Jim owned the business, son Virgil ran the day-to-day operations.

“He built the fishing tackle up pretty well over the years,” Jim said of Yancey’s decade-plus success.

Enough so that fishermen are now going to have to drive some distance to find the gear they need, and that’s not even taking into account vital advice on where to go and what to use to catch what fish.

“We always told fishermen where to go and just what to use,” said Yancey of current bite conditions, “We never kept any secret spots to ourselves.”

The building and property have been sold so what comes next is up to the new owner.
