BREWSTER – A Douglas County Public Utility District (PUD) contractor is at work just south of the Highway 97 Bridge at the confluence of the Okanogan and Columbia rivers creating two breaches in the berm at Cassimer Bar.

The contractor, EcoGrind Site Solutions, LLC from Chewelah, is removing two 40-foot sections of the dike along the south bank of the Okanogan River at the Cassimer Bar Wildlife Management Area. The area is a shoreline-riparian-wetlands unit on the Colville Reservation managed by the PUD in cooperation with the Colville Confederated Tribes on the Colville Indian Reservation.

According to the formal bid request document tendered by the PUD the berm work “consists removing two 40-foot long dike sections to allow two sloughs to connect with the Okanogan River by way of the new water passages. The dike openings will be spanned by two pedestrian bridges.

The contract work also includes grading the dike at both openings and placement of cobble material on the slopes, repair of the dike roadway, and construction of concrete bridge abutments to accommodate the bridges.

Ecogrind was the lowest of three bidders for the contract with a bid of $209,000.
