First time in five years

Brewster Chamber decorates, lights Legion Park Christmas tree

Posted

BREWSTER – For the first time in the past five years, the big fir tree in Legion Park is wearing a coat of Christmas colors of alternating red, green, orange, blue and yellow bulbs draped in lines from the large lighted star on its crown to its base.

After decorating the 60-plus foot evergreen with the help of a hydraulic hoist donated by Washington Tractor, Brewster Chamber of Commerce volunteers added the light strings to the tall fir earlier in the week while youngsters at the Brewster Boys and Girls Club (BBGC) made dinner plate-sized ornaments to hang from the boughs.

On Saturday afternoon, Nov. 24, Santa Claus was on hand and all was ready to flip the switch and officially launch the holiday season in downtown Brewster. While turnout was light for the tree lighting, interest and participation is expected to grow as the tree once again becomes the focal point for the start of the season’s festivities.

Those festivities include Las Posadas at 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 8, a Mexican Christmas tradition of caroling down Main Street from a starting point at The Armory on 600 Main Street and concluding with food and hot chocolate at the Senior Center at 109 S. Bridge Street.

The BBGC and Brewster Police Department will team up for a Winter Carnival on Saturday, Dec. 15, from 10 a.m. to l p.m. that will feature the popular $1 Christmas Shop for kids and adults and include games, crafts, hot chocolate and much more.
