BBGC hosts fourth Gamble Sands Golf Fundraiser

BREWSTER – Scores of golf carts were neatly lined up on the promenade at Gamble Sands Golf Course last Monday morning, May 20, as players began arriving for the fourth annual Brewster Boys and Girls Club (BBGC) Golf Fundraiser.

Following the opening instructions, the golfers set out for their assigned holes for the 11 a.m. shotgun start. Scattered clouds and a light, warm breeze made playing conditions ideal and no rainfall kept allowed course conditions to remain dry.

BBGC Director Jamie Sluys said the event had a full turnout of players for the club’s largest fundraiser of the year.

As he has since the first golf fundraiser, Bill Tsoukalas, Director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Snohomish County attended again this year and spoke to The Quad about future plans for more clubs in Eastern Washington.

“The big picture game plan is to have an organization like Snohomish County based out of Wenatchee,” said Tsoukalas. “We’re working with the community of Malaga; they have 22 acres there.”

Tsoukalas said the club has a seven-year development window to establish ball fields and other facilities using the Brewster club as a model.

A special guest at this year’s fundraiser was Wenatchee Valley College alumnus and ESPN Sportscaster Kenny Mayne who spoke to the assembled players prior to the start of the event and announced that he would offer a special prize during the auction at the conclusion of the day’s events.

The bonus prize turned out to be a VIP visit for two to the Jimmy Kimmel Show in Los Angeles including a meeting with the host, Green Room perks and the whole nine yards. The winning bidder won the trip for $600.

An added twist to the event this year was a helicopter ball drop where pre-purchased numbered golf balls were dropped from a helicopter hovering over a target on the course. The closed to the pin won a 70-inch flat screen T.V. The winner turned out to be Brewster player Tory Wulf who graciously donated the prize to the BBGC, whose own flat screen stopped working more than a month ago.
