Hosting Oct. 16 workshop

BREWSTER – Ken Mattson, a representative from the Wenatchee chapter of SCORE, the Service Corps of Retired Executives, was a guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Brewster Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, Oct. 3.

SCORE, supported by the Small Business Administration (SBA), the all-volunteer group started in the mid-1960s and since its founding has mentored some 11 million entrepreneurs in their efforts to build successful businesses.

Mattson, who has been a SCORE volunteer for eight years, visited the Brewster Chamber to update members on the variety resources his organization offers and some of the new initiatives it is promoting. One of those is reaching out to area chambers to recruit one member in each chamber to be a SCORE liaison who attends workshops and other training and helps connect local entrepreneurs to SCORE services.

Mattson said SCORE is also enlisting the expertise of younger, not-yet-retired specialists who want to share their fields of experience with others. He also endorsed the CareerConnectWA initiative that is focused on steering Washington youth into high-demand, high wage jobs through certified apprenticeship training.

“In Wenatchee, we just don’t have enough plumbers and carpenters,” Mattson said of the skill trades shortage there.

SCORE has teamed up with the SBA, the Small Business Development Center, and Economic Alliance to host Essentials of Entrepreneurship, part of the small business training series that will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 12 Tribes Resort and Casino, 296 U.S. 97 in Omak. The Chamber’s second guest speaker was Steve Brown who is one of two candidates running for Okanogan County Sheriff. Brown and his opponent, Tony Hawley will be profiled in a later edition of the Quad.

In other business chamber members discussed upcoming community events including Trunk or Treat and the Halloween Costume Contest at American Legion on Oct. 31. Following the costume judging, youngsters will be able to trick or treat down main street to the Brewster Boys and Girls Club and the Harvest Carnival starting there at 6 p.m.

Brewster attorney Lainie Hammond agreed to fill the Chamber’s treasurer position recently vacated by Leslie McNamara.
