Over $2,500 in cash prizes to be award in Upskill-A-Thon this month

Posted
NCW - LocalTel and GWATA are launching an UpSkill-A-Thon learning challenge for the month of December.  Build a team of two to four or participate as an individual.  Complete courses through the UpSkill website to be entered to win prizes and take new skills into the new year.  Anyone living in the following counties is eligible to participate:  Grant, Adams, Chelan, Douglas, Okanogon, and Ferry.

Choose from courses that offer digital skills, soft-skills or essential role-based skills for the top ten in demand careers. All UpSkill courses are free to complete during the UpSkill-A-Thon. Each completed course receives a certificate of completion that can then be uploaded.  All courses can be taken online as easily via a smartphone as on a desktop or laptop.

Complete a course, earn a certificate.  Upload certificate, earn a point.  Complete a full learning path, earn 10 extra points. Highest point totals for team and individual win prizes; top prize for teams is $1,000 and top prize for individuals is $500.  The more courses you complete and upload the awarded certificates, the more points you or your team earn.  LocalTel has sweetened the prize pot further by adding an iPad for the highest point earning 9th-12th grade high school student. Prizes will be awarded on Jan. 7 at GWATA’s Kickoff Party (covid compliant drive-by event).

What is UpSkill? The COVID-19 pandemic has created an economic crisis, forcing tens of millions of people out of work or to work remotely. As economies start to reopen, some jobs may not come back, at least not fast enough to meet demand. Jobs that do come back will require more digital skills. In a post-COVID-19 world, all people—especially those from the hardest hit industries and most vulnerable communities—will need to learn new skills to rejoin the workforce prepared for in-demand roles in a more digital economy. To support our local rural and tribal communities, Microsoft, LinkedIn, and GitHub brought together the best of their resources to provide access to free training and job placement services for the most in-demand skills.

These courses and programs have been designed to introduce learners to new skills, and meet you where you are. If you’re ready for more, there are 10 Learning Paths which align with currently in-demand roles. Through UpSkill, community members have open access to learning, certificates and even credentials for these in-demand roles. Job seekers also have access to support and tools to connect with employers and get hired into roles like: software development, sales, project management, digital marketing, IT, data analysis, and graphic design. All courses on the UpSkill website are available for free through March 2021.
