Posted

QUAD CITIES – Current high school sophomores who will be entering their junior year in the fall of 2019 and who are interesting in developing their leadership skills are invited to apply for a position on the 2019-2021 Washington Interscholastic Activities Association

(WIAA) LEAP Committee. Leadership-oriented students involved in WIAA athletics and activities are encouraged to apply. The eight students selected will serve two-year terms during their junior and senior years.

Bridgeport High School senior Ana Trejo is completing her second year as a member of the LEAP Committee. Trejo is the second Quad City student since 2009 to serve at a LEAP member. Bridgeport student Gloria Alameda was a LEAP member in 2014.

Trejo is also the BHS Associated Student Body (ASB) President and FFA Chapter President. She has also served as ASB Secretary and FFA District 7 President.

LEAP, for Leadership through Education, Activities and Personal Development, meets up to half a dozen times during the course of the school year to participate in leadership activities, collaborate on service projects and visit with guest speakers, A WIAA media release said.

“The other LEAP members and I essentially represent all Washington high schoolers on the WIAA,” Trejo told the Quad last July.

“All travel expenses associated with attending the meetings are reimbursed by the WIAA,” the release said. “The summer after their junior year, LEAP Committee members attend a summer retreat designed to strengthen leadership skills and set LEAP Committee goals for the upcoming school year.”

LEAP Committee members who fulfill the requirements of their two-year term receive a $600 scholarship to their institution of choice upon graduation. Applicants are requested to submit a short, creative video personal statement. Applications are due May 31, 2019.
