WAEF taking applications for $1 million in scholarships

Text Apple to 56512 for scholarship information

WENATCHEE - It’s the final month for students to apply for Washington Apple Education Foundation (WAEF) scholarships. Annually, the tree fruit industry awards $1 million in scholarships through WAEF to students raised in families with ties to Washington’s tree fruit industry. The deadline for qualified students to submit completed applications is Monday, March 1 at 11:59 p.m.

Scholarship promotion has been challenging this year with many students not attending school in person. To make finding the application easier, the WAEF has a quick link for students, text the word Apple to 56512. A message will be sent in response with the link to access the foundation’s application and scholarship information.

Additionally, a new scholarship training website was created by WAEF to serve students participating in distance education. It is accessed at www.scholarshipresources.org. The site contains four courses each focusing on a different area of the application process. Students and parents will also find a resources page with various templates, information on paying for college, and webinar recordings with tips on applying for scholarships.

We are concerned for students this year and do not want to see qualified applicants miss out on scholarship funding for the 2021-22 school year,” shared WAEF executive director Jennifer Witherbee. “In years past we’ve visited each of the high schools in our region to share information about scholarships personally with students,” she added.

The foundation has provided virtual scholarship training to students in some schools arranged by high school counselors and teachers this year.

General requirements for WAEF scholarships and scholarship application links are available at www.waef.org/scholarships. Foundation staff welcomes phone calls and emails from students, parents and others about applying for scholarships. WAEF staff can be reached at (509) 663-7713 or at scholarships@waef.org.

The Washington Apple Education Foundation is the charity of the tree fruit industry. Its mission is to impact lives through access to educational opportunities.
