Bears finish sixth in 2B Central following loss to Bulldogs

Posted

BREWSTER – The Bears varsity basketball team lost to visiting Okanogan, 67-57, on Senior Night, Feb. 4, but made the Bulldogs work for the victory.

Unlike the first game between the two teams on Jan. 3, where Okanogan won by nearly 40 points, the Bulldogs were actually trailing the Bears midway through the third quarter this time around before narrowly regaining the lead heading into the final period.

Using their height advantage with four players ranging from 6’4” to 6’9”, the Bulldogs took a two-point 15-13 first-quarter lead off the 13 points by 6’5” Carter Kuchenbuch. Okanogan built its lead to 10 points, 32-22 at halftime.

Midway through the third quarter, the Bears scored 14 unanswered points, including a three-point shot by Oscar Churape that tied the game 36-all. Preston Thompson gave Brewster the lead with a free throw, and Skyler Covington hit a trey to put the Bears up 40-36. Brewster then missed some key free throws and had only hit one shot as Okanogan closed the gap to lead 42-40 at the end of the third.

The Bulldogs slowly pulled away to a 67-57 win. Okanogan ends the regular season in fourth place in the 2B Central, and the Bears are sixth. The playoffs just ahead will determine which four teams advance to district play in Moses Lake next week.
