Bears rescue late game win over St. George’s Dragons

Posted

SPOKANE – Led by four players scoring in double figures the Brewster Bears varsity basketball team staged a fourth quarter 77-62 come-from-behind win over the St. George Dragons on the road Dec. 3.

“We battled with them throughout the first three quarters, but were unable to take the lead,” said head coach Michael Taylor.

Taylor said St. George’s has a solid team with good size and a pair of shooting guards that need to be closely guarded by defenders.

“We played better in the second half by taking care of the ball and getting a good possession most trips down the court,” said Taylor. “We were down eight after three quarters but had a very good fourth quarter to take the lead and then win.”

That “very good” fourth included an 18-0 run by the Bears as part of a 26-point quarter while holding the Dragons to just three.

“Our defense played more intently and they made some out of character plays, which we capitalized on,” said Taylor. “We had some good shooting nights by multiple players and when we matched good offense with good defense, we gained ground and took control of the game in the end.”

Kelson Gebbers connected for 27 points hitting nearly 50 percent of his shots and pulling down 16 rebounds. Brady Wulf scored 16, Reese Vassar, 11, and Tyson Schertenleib, 10.

The comeback win “should give the guys confidence moving in to this week with some home games,” Taylor said which included the Bears’ first home matchup against visiting Liberty Bell at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 8, and Liberty on Saturday, Dec. 11.

The Brewster varsity girls won their game, 67-53.
