Lady Bears clinch League with 18-3 win over Liberty Bell

BREWSTER – The Lady Bears varsity softball team put its undefeated win streak to the test in post-season play when it hosted Tonasket in the first round of the North Central Washington 2B League Championships on Tuesday, May 9, followed by Liberty Bell on Saturday, May 13.
Brewster rallied from two runs down in the first inning to emerge the 9-4 winner over the Lady Tigers and advanced to the championship game against Liberty Bell.
Tonasket took advantage of a walk in the top of the first inning and put a couple runs across,” said coach Rick Miller. “I thought we played a little tight in the beginning of the game.”
It didn’t take the Lady Bears long to settle down and tend to business. Freshman, Sammi Emigh slapped a single in the second inning to bring home Abby Urias, and Brewster went after more.
“Bizzy Stam started a big third inning for us,” said Miller. “Yvette Sanchez and Abby Urias both hit two RBI doubles and Marlisa Garcia added an RBI single.”
At the end of three innings, Brewster was up, 6-2, and never lost the game momentum after that.
Tonasket scored in the fourth but the Lady Bears countered with runs by Stam and Michaun Kelpman. In the sixth inning Kelpman scored again to match another run by the Tigers to make it 9-4. Tonasket managed one base hit in the top of the seventh in its final chance to make a comeback.
Yvette Sanchez pitched all 6-1/2 innings for the Brewster and gave up four hits on 11 runs with a walk and five strikeouts.

Liberty Bell silenced

Following double-digit wins at home over Lake Roosevelt, 13-2, and Waterville-Mansfield, 10-0, Saturday, May 6, the Liberty Bell Lady Lions had an 11-game win streak snapped by Brewster, the same team that did it last April 18.
In a one-sided run-fest, the Lady Bears took the early lead and cruised to an 18-3 final that ended in the bottom of the fourth inning on the 15-run Mercy Rule.
Both teams now advance to the District 5/6 championships in an eight-team, one-day tournament in Ephrata on Saturday, May 20. The No. 1 seed Lady Bears will face Tri-Cities Prep at noon on Field 1. The winner of that game will play the winner of Lake Roosevelt v. Kittitas with that winner advancing to the title game.
