Pateros city council honors National Library Workers Day

PATEROS – Did you know that April 9 was National Library Workers Day? The city council did and used the occasion of its regular monthly meeting on April 15 (Tax Day) to issue a belated proclamation to recognize the Pateros Public Library staff on the occasion:

WHEREAS, libraries are essential institutions that offer the opportunity for everyone to connect with others, learn new skills, and pursue their passions, no matter where they are on life’s journey;

WHEREAS, libraries and library support staff bring expert assistance, personal service and access to a wealth of resources and programs, both in person and online;

WHEREAS, library professionals provide this invaluable service to library users regardless of race, ethnicity, creed, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or socio-economic status;

WHEREAS, the library workers at Pateros Public Library tirelessly serve our community, enriching our lives and fostering literacy and lifelong learning through their expertise and commitment;

WHEREAS, the passion and dedication of library professionals contribute to the cultural enrichment, educational advancement, economic development, and social cohesion of our city;

WHEREAS, libraries. Library workers, and library supporters across America are celebrating the National Library Workers Day, sponsored by the American Library Association-Allied Professional Association (ALA-APA);

THEREFORE, be it resolved that I, Kelly Hook, Mayor of Pateros, proclaim that Tuesday, April 9, 2024, was “National Library Workers Day.” I encourage all in this community to take advantage of the variety of library resources available and to thank library workers for their exceptional contributions to American life.

For those who failed to appreciate the significance of National Library Workers Day, consider that it was ushered in by a total solar eclipse the previous day, April 8. To be fair, a handful of other national days – National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day, Winston Churchill Day, and National Be Kind to Lawyers Day - also claim April 9, or the second Tuesday in April, to celebrate. Pateros librarian Ana Trejo said the regional library network observed the occasion as part of National Library Week.

“On our Facebook page for NCW Libraries they shared recognition and shout-out posts to the staffs all over the county,” said Trejo. “It was mostly an online celebration.”

Trejo, a 2014 graduate and class valedictorian at Bridgeport High School, has been the city’s librarian since 2018. Prior to that she served as the customer service technician at the Bridgeport and Brewster library branches. Prior to her employment with NCW Libraries Trejo worked with the migrant HeadStart program in Bridgeport.
Trejo grew up in Bridgeport and attended Washington State University, graduating in 2018 with a BA in Spanish Language and a BS in Biology.
