Rabies-positive bat found in Chelan County

Posted

EAST WENATCHEE — A bat found outside a Chelan County residence tested positive for rabies after a person and their pet had direct contact with the animal, according to the Chelan-Douglas Health District.

The bat was submitted to the Washington State Public Health Laboratories and confirmed positive Sept. 29. The person and pet involved were referred to medical providers for preventive rabies treatment. The health district said it is coordinating its response with the Washington State Department of Health.

Health officials are advising residents to avoid direct contact with bats and other wild animals. Anyone bitten or scratched by a bat should wash the wound with soap and running water for at least 10 minutes and seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Residents who find a bat in their living space or believe they or a pet may have had contact with one should contact the Chelan-Douglas Health District at 509-886-6400. Officials also reminded residents that Washington law requires dogs, cats and ferrets to be kept current on rabies vaccinations.
