Youngsters flock to 2017 Pateros-Brewster Youth Wrestling Tournament

Posted

BREWSTER – Since he has been doing since 1995, Pateros wrestling coach, Bill Haley, held the annual Pateros-Brewster 2017 Youth Wrestling Tournament at the Brewster High School gym last Saturday, March 18.
Youngsters from surrounding counties represented teams from Omak, Chelan, Twisp, Pateros, Cashmere, Brewster, Oroville and other points. Wrestlers as young at three years old put fourth their best effort – some not without a few tears – in pursuit of a first, second or third-place medal to add as a memory-marker for some of their earliest competition.
Haley held his tournaments at Brewster until 2005 and then relocated the event to the Pateros gym.
“We have partnered with Lake Chelan to show them how to run these little kid tournaments,” said Haley. “Now we’re back with Brewster to show them how to run them.”
Haley said the Pateros gym “is just a little on the small side to fit one in and run them comfortably.”
Haley said his Pateros venues were always good at pulling in the participants.
“We have had a 400-plus kid tournament and the cars filled the streets all the way to Sweet River Bakery,” said Haley. “That was challenging and fun.”
