Brewster school board met

Here's the latest in Brewster School District news from Superintendent Eric Driessen:

"Enrollment is up, we have an additional first grade class and kindergarten class.

"The district added a second PE teacher and an AVID teacher. We have increased the number of college classes we are offering to 22 classes. We offer tutorial time from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday- Thursday at the MS/HS and for elementary we have Afters until 4:15 p.m. each day with transportation home provided.

"Currently there are a number of changes taking place in education and these changes are keeping educators busy trying to understand and implement them. Common Core State Standards is one of those changes, new standards are being put in place for students to learn and be assessed on. Each school must adopt an instructional framework, a philosophy of instruction that will be used district wide. Lastly, a new evaluation system for teachers and principals is being implemented."

During the Sept. 24 meeting, the school board also welcomed new staff and voted to sell a surplus piece of property on Brewster Flats.

Almost voting time

The general election is a mere month away, and the deadline for voter registration is looming.

The last day to register via mail is this Saturday, Oct. 6. You can register online until Monday, Oct. 8, at the Washington Secretary of State's website.

If you've never registered to vote in Washington, you've got until Oct. 29 to visit the Okanogan or Douglas County elections offices to register in person.

For more information on registering, log on to sos.wa.gov and look for the MyVote link. The voter pamphlet is also available on the secretary of state's website, but registered voters will receive it in the mail this month. Ballots will be mailed Oct. 19 and must be postmarked by election day on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

Your county's auditor has details online about who has filed for office locally. The Okanogan County Auditor's Office website is wei.sos.wa.gov/county/okanogan/en/pages/default.aspx. Douglas County can be found at www.douglascountywa.net/departments/auditor.
