Bears win three league games, give up two non-league outings

BREWSTER – The Bears varsity baseball team collected three Central Washington 2B league wins and a pair of non-league losses since last Tuesday, April 24.
Brewster stopped the Tigers at Tonasket, 12-1, April 24.
“(We) got on them early and just chipped away until we had the 10-run advantage,” said head coach Todd Phillips.
Tonasket spoiled the near-shutout in the bottom of the fifth inning following back-to-back two-out walks, said Phillips. Then a Tigers batter smacked a double to score one run.
Two days after the Tonasket win the Bears were on the road for a three-plus hour, 185-mile trip to Zillah. Following all that trouble, the South Central Athletic Conference 1A Leopards sent Brewster home with a 5-3 loss.
On the bright side, Phillips said he was “happy for the opportunities se have had this season to play good games that will help us prepare for the playoffs.”
The following day, Friday, April 27, the Bears took a tough 7-2 loss from 1A Chelan of the Caribou Trail League.
Phillips said it was the Bears’ first loss to the Goats since he has been head coach and it snapped a 17-game home win streak that Brewster was riding.
Brewster had to work out of an early hole but tied the game in the fourth inning, but Chelan rallied to seal the game in the seventh.
A doubleheader against Manson on Saturday, April 28 went all Brewster’s way with wins of 8-1 and 16-1. Logan McGuire scored Brewster’s first run in the third inning of the first game and the Bears never looked back.
Brewster “took control of this one early,” said Phillips of game two, as the 15-run margin implies.
The Bears were scheduled to host Tonasket in the final regular season game and Senior Night on Tuesday, May 1.
