BREWSTER – The Waterville-Mansfield Lady Shockers varsity basketball team lived up to its mascot name with a high-voltage performance on the road last Tuesday, Jan. 9, and handed the Brewster Lady Bears their first Central Washington 2B League loss this season.
The Lady Shockers, with a fourth-place, 5-3 record coming into Champions gym, uncorked a first quarter that saw a pair of three-pointers from Justine Clements and another from Sarah Mullen to spark Waterville-Mansfield to a 15-9 lead going into the second period. Waterville-Mansfield held and extended its lead into the half with a 10-point second quarter, two more than the Lady Bears could manage.
Brewster came out in the third quarter and narrowed the 25-17 halftime margin by two with an 11-point effort. Brooke Willms kept the Lady Shockers in winning position with a pair of three-pointers in the third to score all but three of Waterville-Mansfield’s nine points.
The Lady Bears made a spirited run in the final quarter, closing within three of the leaders on the strength of a three-point shot by Marta Martinez and a pair of baskets by Maret Miller. However, a buzzer-beating three-point attempt to tie the game in the last second went wide, giving the underdogs the win.
