Bears edge Bridgeport, 3-2, in battle of defending champs

BREWSTER – The Bears’ defending Central Washington 2B league champion varsity soccer team edged last year’s District 5/6 champion Bridgeport Mustangs, 3-2, at Bridgeport on Thursday, April 11, after losing a close 2-1 match to Liberty Bell two days earlier.

“The Mustangs struggled in the first half to put their shots in the goal,” said team spokesman Chris Gonzalez. “Brewster scored three goals in the first half.”

The Mustangs recovered in the second half with two goals by freshman Yair Diaz but could not quite close the gap.

Brewster suffered its second loss of the early season in a 2-1 decision against the visiting Liberty Bell Mountain Lions on Tuesday, April 9.

The Bears, 3-2 in league, and Mustangs, 3-1, are a game apart behind leader Tonasket, 4-1. The Bears were schedule to be on the road against Manson, Tuesday, April 16, followed by Oroville, Thursday, April 18. The

Mustangs were scheduled to host Liberty Bell, Tuesday, April 16, and Tonasket at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April. 18.
