First annual Cherries Jubilee brings a festival event back to Brewster

BREWSTER – By all accounts from both participants and spectators, the first annual Cherries Jubilee was a hit on all fronts from the early morning three-kilometer Fun Walk/Run to the closing entertainment that brought down the curtain at 9 p.m.
The 10 a.m. parade included a float from the Omak Chamber of Commerce, dancing horses from Comperos Mexican Restaurant, candidates running for Okanogan County Sheriff and Okanogan County Prosecutor, 12th District State Representative Mike Steele, Brewster Mayor Art Smith, a horse-drawn wagon from Howard’s in Pateros, the Brewster Chamber float honoring Large Business of the Year, Gebbers Farms, small Business of the Year Sweet T’s, and logo design winner Angeline D’Angelo Walker, plus some two dozen classic cars, among other entries.
U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell stopped by for an unscheduled surprise visit, bought a signature cherry pie and posed for photos.
Overcast skies threatened the venue and a 2 p.m. rain squall slowed down the activities until the weather cleared in time for the 5 p.m. entertainment began with Brittany Jean and followed by Waterdog.
A total of 17 three-on-three basketball teams, ranging from four in the adult division to three from the elementary age ranks competed on the six courts reserved for tournament play.
Spectators cast their votes for the best in category at the Car Show that included a variety of classic rides and a couple of rat rods.
Attending his first car show of the year, Darold Brandenburg of Winthrop brought The Bumblebee, his 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle convertible.
Ron Johnston brought a couple of matching red entries, a 1965 Mustang convertible with a stock 289 V-8 engine, and a 1929 Ford sedan powered by a Chev 327 engine.
Roger Erlendsen entered his 1953 Ford R-100 pickup; Wayne MacNeil his 1955 Chev Bel-Air and Victor Fonseca his 1973 Plymouth Duster.
There was even a pair of unconventional entries called Rat Rods, a combination of creative expression and street-legal components that are only limited by the builders’ flights of fancy.
Tim Guffy modified a 1950 Willy’s pickup and Jeff Klimek reworked his 1930 Ford Tudor.
