WASA recognizes Mike Hull as Outstanding Educational Leader

PATEROS – The Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) and PEMCO Insurance recognized Pateros School Principal Mike Hull with the 2018 Robert J. Handy Most Effective Administrator Award at the 38th annual WASA and Association of Washington School Principals’ (AWSP) Summer Conference on June 26-28 in Spokane.

Handy founded the Washington State Teachers Credit Union, later expanded to PEMCO. The award, established in 2002, is presented annually to one highly effective superintendent or administrator from each of a small school district (up to 500 students), medium-size district (501-2,000 students), and large district (more than 2,000 students). Along with the honor comes a $10,000 award divided equally among the three recipients.

A peer committee selected the winners from a list of candidates that described each nominee’s role in promoting nine characteristics of high performing schools or districts set forth by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Those nine characteristics are:

1 . Clear and shared focus.
2 . High standards and expectations for all students.  
3 . Effective school leadership.  
4 . High levels of collaboration and communication.  
5. Curriculum, instruction and assessments aligned with state standards.  
6 . Frequent monitoring of learning and teaching.  
7 . Focused professional development.   
8 . Supportive learning environment.  
9 . High level of family and community involvement.

More than 1,000 school superintendents, principals, and administrators from across the state met in Spokane at the WASA/AWSP Conference whose theme, Leadership: Equity in Action. Focused on school leaders’ passion for excellence, equity and opportunity for students, a WASA media release said. The gathering also hosted the 2018 awards luncheon.
