People who want to volunteer as "weather spotters" are being invited to training Thursday, May 29 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Transportation and Land Services Building, 140 19th Street NW in East Wenatchee.

Weather spotters provide temperature, wind, cloud cover, barometric pressure and other weather data to the National Weather Service; those reports can't be duplicated any other way, according to a press release from Douglas County Emergency Management.

No previous experience is necessary; the training is free. Spotters are not required to have weather instruments but they are helpful, the press release said. Weather spotter reports are added to radar, satellite and other data and have enabled the weather service to issue more timely and accurate warnings in cases of hazardous weather events, the press release said.

People who want more information can contact Mike Dingle, Douglas County Emergency Management in East Wenatchee, (509) 884-0941.

Canning experts with the extension office recommend checking the gauge every year, since that's a crucial component of successful canning. An inaccurate gauge can result in food that is unsafe to eat, said Margaret Viebrock, an extension educator with WSU-Douglas County extension.
