The fishing area next to the debris basin at Chief Joseph Dam will remain closed to the public until this Saturday, May 17 at the earliest. Contractors are using a crane around the log boom, so the fishing area was closed due to the potential danger to the public, according to a press release from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Boating education class to be offered at Chief Joseph Dam

Rangers at Chief Joseph Dam will offer two sessions of a boating education class for young people and adults on two separate Saturdays, May 17 and 24. Classes will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the project's commons building. New state rules require that all people 12 to 24 years of age who are operating a boat must complete a boating education class and carry the certification card with them while on the water. Over time that requirement will extend to all boat operators born after January 1, 1955. The law applies to all operators of all motorboats of 15 horsepower or greater. But boaters only have to take one class; the certification card is good for a lifetime. The class, "Adventures in Boating Washington, a course on responsible boating," covers the basics of boat operation, according to a press release from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The fee is $10 and each class is limited to 20 people. Advance registration is required. Participants can register by contacting Mark Harris, 686-3541, and leaving a message; participants will be notified which class they should attend.

Summer season tours begin at Chief Joseph Dam

People who want a closer look at the operation of a hydropower project can visit the visitor center at Chief Joseph Dam every weekend in May. The visitor center is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday this month; tours of the powerhouse are held at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tours are limited to 10 people; all adult participants must have a government-issued photo identification card (such as a driver's license). Tours for bigger groups or in Spanish can be arranged with advance notice. Park rangers also can schedule nature walks or other environmental programs, according to a press release issued by the Corps. The visitor center is open daily between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Corrected address for Bridgeport Daze parade applications

Whoops. A misprint on the application form may mean misdirection for some applications for the Bridgeport Daze parade. Huff said she's continuing to look for people who want to walk, ride a horse, drive a car or golf cart or any wheeled vehicle, in the parade. No previous experience is necessary; the training is free. Spotters are not required to have weather instruments but they are helpful, the press release said.
