Bears league co-champions with Hornets

Posted

BRIDGEPORT – The Mustangs and Brewster Bears headed for the District 5/6 playoffs following their final regular season game here last Tuesday, Feb. 5. (See stories this page)

Brewster opened the game with a full-court defense and capitalized in many Bridgeport turnovers and steals to take an early commanding lead that the Bears kept through all four quarters to a 77-40 win. The Mustangs did get their own share of shot opportunities but were unable to score on most which, combined with the smothering Brewster defense, kept them in catch-up mode all evening.

It was Senior Night for the Mustangs who said farewell to seniors Tony Ruiz and Ronaldo Ubaldo.

The Bears, co-champions of the Central Washington 2B league with Oroville, ended the season 14-2 in league an 16-4 overall. On the state 2B level the Bears are ranked sixth in the WIAA RPI (Rating Percentage Index) between fifth-place Life Christian Academy of Tacoma (17-3), and seventh-place Toutle Lake (14-6). Kittitas (21-1), St. George’s Spokane (18-2), Toledo (18-2), and Colfax (16-4) are the respective first through fourth RPI leaders as of the Feb. 6 postings.

Bridgeport finished sixth in the CW2B with a 6-10 league record but slid in under the wire for the final spot in District play.
