Bears varsity football team mauls Manson Trojans

BREWSTER – The Brewster Bears varsity football team opened its season with a 22-6 win on the road at Manson, March 5.
Behind a strong defensive effort the Bears forced turnovers that worked in their favor to hold down the home team’s scoring potential.
 “The defense played great all night,” said head coach Jake Johanson. “We did a good job forcing nine fumbles and tackled great all night long.”
Arnie Arevalo led the Bears with 17 tackles, forced a fumble and had a fumble recovery. Adaih Najera had six tackles to go along with two QB sacks, a fumble recovery, and a pass interception.
Quarterback Kelson Gebbers connected on nine passes in 22 attempts for 113 yards and one touchdown.
Gebbers’ receivers included Tyson Schertenleib, four catches and 69 yards, Logan McGuire for 16 yards, two receptions, and the touchdown, Reese Vassar, two receptions for 15 yards, and Gio Nila, one reception for 13 yards.
On the ground Nila and Najera led the offense with eight carries for 109 yards and 13 carries for 69 yards respectively. Both scored TDs. Gebbers ran on seven keeper plays for 23 yards, and Schertenleib had four carries.
