Billygoats capture District basketball crown

Posted

PATEROS – The Billygoats varsity basketball are district champions of the Central Washington B 1B following victories over Entiat, 57-24, at home, Tuesday, Feb.13, and Riverside Christian, 58-45, at Eastmont last Saturday, Feb. 15.
Coach Marcus Stennes praised the play of the Crusaders and said his team has some problems in the playoff game.
We struggled throughout the game with 28 turnovers but balanced it out with 16 steals luckily,” Stennes said.
Stennes credited sophomore Ethan Freels and senior Logan Robinson for leadership on both ends of the court and for their double-digit scoring or 14 and 12 points respectively. Robinson also pulled down 15 rebounds and Freels grabbed 10.
“Andrew Gonzalez led us in total points hitting some big shots early to get us going and converting 5-7 free throws,” Stennes said of his junior guard.
The Billygoats led at all stops but let RC close within one point, 19-18 at halftime.
Pateros will face Naselle in the first round of loser-out regional competition at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 24, at Mark Morris High School in Longview.

Nannies come close
The Nannies lost to Riverside Christian, 55-49, in the first round of District play on Feb. 14, and faced the Crusaders for a second time two days later in a battle for second place. The margin was closer the second time around, but RC was again victorious by four points, 35-31 to clinch the second slot Regional competition.
