Boys and Girls Club golf fundraiser is biggest and best yet

Posted

BREWSTER – A record 130 golfers turned out under overcast skies at Gamble Sands Golf Resort last Monday, April 25, for the seventh annual Brewster Boys and Girls Club Golf Fundraiser. BBGC executive director Jamie Sluys said this is the non-profit’s best turnout yet for its largest fundraiser.

“In the past we never made over a hundred players,” Sluys said.

Several new attractions were added to this year’s event, but the headliner had to be the $50,000 cash prize for sinking a hole-in-one on the 16th tee. Prizes were also awarded for longest drive on No, 18 and closest to the pin on each par three hole.

The Brewster Chamber of Commerce donated the tournament grand prize of $1,000 that chamber President Mike Mauk presented to Sluys before play began.

Following a greeting and orientation players piled into carts and dispersed around to assigned spots for the 10 a.m. for the four-player playing format.  From their assigned starting tees each team member hit a drive and each team continued to play the hole from their player’s longest opening drive.

To insure that nobody went hungry or thirsty during competition beer kegs were dispensed at greens #1 and #10. Hot dogs and brats were available at #1 and La Milpa Mexican restaurant in Brewster had a taco truck parked at #10. Washington Trust Bank staged a barbecue trailer near the clubhouse.

Playing time was calculated to take about 4 ½ hours to complete the course after which everyone gathered for a barbecue and auction on the patio behind the Danny Boy Bar & Grill.

Sluys said he is planning another fundraising for next spring and is still working on those details.
