BREWSTER – Lifelong resident Don Childers, appointed to fill unexpired city council Position 5 held by the late Tim Reib, is seeking election to that seat on the Nov. 7 ballot.

In a prepared statement about his candidacy, Childers said he is passionate about the community he has been asked to serve and enjoys being part of what he calls “an amazing team that is moving forward with economic developments and improvements that will both grow and maintain our beautiful town for all citizens.”

A military veteran, Childers served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam following his graduation from Brewster High School. He was a radio teletype operator with a helicopter unit in Cu Chi, famous for the “tunnel rats” who fought there.

“I returned to my hometown, raised two amazing kids – daughter Nikki and son, Chris – and worked for Omak Wood Products,” said Childers. “I retired after 30 years of service and continued to work after retirement as a commercial bus driver.”

Childers served the county as a driver transporting citizens between Omak and Ellensburg before retiring a second time.

“I met so many wonderful people during my tenure,” Childers said.

Speaking with The Quad on Oct. 25, Childers said that two important projects he supports include a renovating of the Rec Center building that currently houses the Brewster Boys and Girls Club. As the only club of its kind in the area Childers said the BBGC serves an important need for the areas’ youngsters.

A second anticipated project is a new restroom in Columbia Cove Park by the Douglas County PUD. The current facility falls short when events like the annual salmon derby overwhelm its limited capacity.
